Your Tools to the Trade

Written Feb 27, 2001

In July of 2000 an organization called 19thCenturyONLY was formed to help create a greater appreciation for the niche of 19th century sports collectibles investing.

Recently, with the landmark sale of an early 20th Century T206 Wagner going for $1.26M, a mid-20th century 1954 Hank Aaron selling for upwards of $100K and a late 20th century card of Alex Rodriguez selling for $20K our attention is drawn to the question - what about 19th century items and their values? Logically you would think that early cards would realize the highest prices. Recent sales show an 1887 N173 Old Judge cabinet of King Kelly selling for $13,486, a set of 6 Allen & Ginter N29 baseball players selling for $5,222 and an 1895 Mayo Cut Plug of Anson selling for $2,922. It is my belief that the current prices of 19th century material are at a bargain level. At minimum, I believe these items should increase in value. This can be determined by taking a closer look at what we call the "collectible formula": scarcity + desirability + demand = the price level.

Scarcity- the items couldn't be any scarcer, in most cases there are but few or sometimes only one example that exists; desirability- I believe these items are desirable pieces of history, illustrative of the early beginnings of baseball, photography, lithography and tobacco premiums. Demand, however, has not fully been fully developed yet. This weak link in the formula has resulted from the lack of widespread information about these items. There are few individuals throughout the country that seek this material or even know about it.

As far as condition for 19th Century items, these items are so scarce that condition is less of a factor. A 1909 T206 Doyle in PSA2 Good condition, (few known examples) recently sold in a Mastronet auction for $178,500 Certainly there should be equivalent 19th century examples that should bring a comparable realized price since I believe they exceed the Doyle in terms of desirability.

Back in July of 2000 when we launched the service, I expressed that it is difficult to benchmark price levels in the sports collectible market. I made reference to the art world where prices are based on realized auction sales and that there are no accurate price guidelines or resources that have been established to reflect valuations realized from auctions in the sports collectible market. In absence of an accurate price guide, I recommended using the "collectible formula": scarcity + desirability + demand = the price level. I am proud to announce that 19thCenturyONLY.org has been undergoing a major project of compiling auction results from Mastro FSA, Robert Edward Auctions, Ron Oser, MastroWest, Oregon Trail, Leland's, Sotheby's, Christies, Superior Sports Auctions, Hunt Auctions, Sloate & Smolin, Rotman's, Clean Sweep, About Time and others. Our new service is called The Realized Auction Price Sheet(The R.A.P. Sheet) and it is expected to be available soon.

A major factor that has created awareness for sports card collectors are organizations that have contributed to increased marketplace visibility. In 1989 the concept of card authentication and grading was introduced. Since that time, PSA (Collectors Universe) and SGC have emerged and are establishing a quality standard for the grading process. As a result, sports collectible investors trade either PSA or SGC cards over the internet without ever seeing the material. It's rapidly commoditizing this market. In November of 1999 Collectors Universe went public. To illustrate growth in this market, for the nine months ending 4/1/00, revenues for Collectors Universe totaled $31 million, up from $14.3 million. (19thCenturyONLY has selected SGC as the preferred authentication and grading service for 19th Century material. You can click here to learn why).

Even with the increased ease that these organizations contribute to sports card collecting, the demand for 19th century items is still not strong. Most collectors have little understanding of 19th century material. Our group serves as a facilitator to create more widespread knowledge and interest in 19thCenturyONLY material. The greater the interest, the more interesting the market becomes.

In early January we successfully completed our second round of financing. Since that time, we have been undergoing a programming update of the 19thcenturyonly.org Web site.
